BUSTED

I had not landed into consequential trouble with underage drinking until my freshman year in college at the University of Kansas. I had been introduced to “The Hawk” early that fall semester by a sophomore in my fraternity who wanted to show me this mysterious bar called The Hawk. I was amazed at how easy it was to get in with virtually any identification that had the age 21 on it. I very much enjoyed the college atmosphere. I made it two months with no trouble going to The Hawk with my friends while having a great time every time, because being a freshman, the hawk was new and exciting. It was September 30th, 2011, a cold fall Friday night in Lawrence. I started the night off like any other night, showering and getting my clothes ready to go to the bar. I was at my house hanging out with a group of friends drinking before we went out for the night. Around ten o’clock at night we all decided to abscond to The Hawk before the line got too long. We all walked out of my room into the hall and exited through fire escape door into the bitter cold fall air and began to descend down the cold metal staircase, then down the hill to the front doors of “The Jayhawk Café.” We got in line behind about twenty people when over the head of the person in front of me I saw one of my friends working the front door, whom agreed to let my friends and myself in right away. I was having a great time in The Hawk, until I received a phone call from a friend I had came with and lost while being there. I stepped out of the front door of the main bar to take the incoming call. I went out of the obnoxious room filled with sounds of yelling and beer spilling only to see a sheriff accompanied by another police officer standing on the other side of the gated fence. I set my drink down on a wooden crate and before I could even turn around, I felt someone grip my arm and pull me outside the fenced in area. After evading the police every time I drank underage throughout my four years of high school it finally caught up to me, I was busted.
