I have consumed a fair amount of alcohol in my lifetime, the vast majority being in college and high school, similar to the nearly 10.8 million other people under the age of twenty-one in the United States. Many people below the age of twenty-one indulge in alcohol related events simply to have a good time with their friends. Alcohol consumption is usually part of a social function in college, most often inaugurated at some point throughout ones high school career. In theory, it is all fun and good times with your friends that’s until the police show up. Kansas Police write hundreds of minor in possession (MIP) charges per year to kids who are just trying to fight their restless blues and have some fun. I know because I am one of these kids. I have attended countless house parties that involved underage drinking and know many people that have received an MIP. I considered myself lucky throughout high school for never obtaining an MIP. Then came college, I got very unlucky obtaining not one, not two, but three minor in possession charges. Those three MIP’s instigated my intrigue in the drinking age and why it is what it is. Why must you get in so much trouble for engaging in some harmless fun on a nice weekend with your friends?
